Proceeds from the event to help with Three Rivers Heritage Trail maintenance and improvements
PITTSBURGH (July 24, 2018) – The first-ever Friends of the Riverfront Virtual Trail Run is open through August 31 to inspire more people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the unique perspectives that Pittsburgh’s urban trails have to offer. The new virtual run gives runners the opportunity to complete the run at their convenience and location of their choice while raising money for the care of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail.
“Virtual runs are gaining in popularity, offering runners flexibility to run when and where they want, to avoid bad weather or miss out because of schedule conflicts,” said Patrice Matamoros, P3R CEO. “It may seem a bit strange to traditional runners, but virtual runs are great for those who want convenience. And these types of events are often associated with charitable causes.”
Proceeds from the virtual run will benefit the Friends of the Riverfront and their efforts to maintain and improve Pittsburgh’s trail system. Event partners UPMC Health Plan, P3R and Steel City Road Runners also hope the event will encourage more Pittsburghers to make the time to experience the Three Rivers Heritage Trail and the freedom of the great outdoors in the middle of the city.
“We’ve made registering for and participating in this year’s event as easy as possible so trail users can support us anywhere and anytime before August 31,” said Valerie Beichner, Friends of the Riverfront Executive Director. “If you’re looking to participate with a group, runners will have the option to complete their virtual 5K or 10K as part of a Steel City Road Runners training run on Saturday, August 11.”
However runners choose to complete the run, the suggested donation for the Friends of the Riverfront Trail Virtual Run is $15 per person. Once the virtual run closes on August 31, all registrants who logged their run via an online from will receive a commemorative t-shirt to show off their support of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, which now encompasses more than 25 miles of urban riverfront trails along both banks of the mighty Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers.
