PITTSBURGH (September 22, 2018) – There’s no better way to bid farewell to a long, hot summer and welcome the autumn season than by getting outside with your family and friends. More than 1,000 runners and walkers of all ages did just that this morning at the third annual FlyBy 5K and 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk presented by CNX Resources.

The cool, fall-like temperatures made for the perfect weather for this one-of-a-kind race that grants special access to runways runways near hangars and aircraft at Pittsburgh International Airport. Andrew Wirfel of Carnegie and Kate Kokal of Pittsburgh were the race champions in 17:33 and 18:42, respectively.

“We’re always excited to welcome the community to Pittsburgh International Airport for this special opportunity to experience the facilities from a unique vantage point,” said Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis. “We thank our sponsors, partners at P3R and TSA for assisting us in this event.”

Other participants racing the runway today included the List family from Beaver, who have never missed this event and encouraged almost 20 family and friends to join them this year. Also racing together was the Evans family from Ontario, Canada. They typically participate in a race when travelling and thought taking flight on Runway 28R and taxiways November and Bravo would be a fun and unique way to celebrate their oldest son’s birthday.

After crossing the finish line, participants received a custom designed technical t-shirt and finisher medal featuring an airplane suncatcher. They also enjoyed post-race food such as Isaly’s chipped ham and Eat’n Park Smiley cookies, along with giveaways and activities from event partners Grant Oliver Corporation, Fleet Feet Sports Pittsburgh and CNX.

“As part of this region for 154 years, CNX shares in the Allegheny County Airport Authority’s commitment to community engagement, so we were thrilled to support today’s race as the new title partner,” said Tim Dugan, Chief Operating Officer at CNX. “We’re also very proud that the natural gas we are producing right here is helping to propel the airport and the entire region forward.”

Presented by the Allegheny County Airport Authority and P3R, the family-friendly race benefitted the Allegheny County Airport Authority Charitable Foundation. This nonprofit organization was established in 2013 to enhance the experience of military, families and others traveling through Pittsburgh International and Allegheny County Airport.
