PITTSBURGH – Running USA, the trade industry for the sport of road running, has named P3R CEO Patrice Matamoros as the recipient of the 2018 Women’s Leadership Award. The award recognizes a woman in the running industry who has been an outstanding leader in the sport and has served the sport with distinction.
”We congratulate Patrice on this well-deserved recognition. She joins an elite group of women who have set the course for gender equality in the running industry,” said Rich Harshbarger, Running USA CEO.
Matamoros is the CEO of P3R, Pittsburgh’s premier organization for promoting running and community health and fitness through large-scale events, races and community programs. She joined P3R in 2008 as the executive director and successfully re-launched the Pittsburgh Marathon after a five-year hiatus. Now, the weekend of events is one of the fastest growing in the country with more than 40,000 participants expected for the 10th anniversary, May 4-6, 2018.
Committed to hosting a “race with soul,” Matamoros and her team have created comprehensive health and fitness programs that benefit the Pittsburgh community and culminate at DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon race weekend. Since 2009, the event has raised more than $10 million for charity, and more than 24,000 children have participated in the Toyota Pittsburgh Kids Marathon while completing the physical activity and nutrition program Kids of STEEL. The event also has continued to grow its elite athlete program and has hosted top international and national runners, including Olympians and national champions. The success of this program earned the event the opportunity to host the 2018 and 2019 USA Track & Field Half Marathon Championships.
P3R continues to grow and thrive under Matamoros’ leadership. The organization is now using their event expertise to work with several businesses and organizations to produce world-class events in Pittsburgh. This year, P3R is working with clients such as the City of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Allegheny County Airport Authority to produce running and endurance events in Pittsburgh.
The 2018 Women’s Leadership Award was presented at the Awards Dinner during the 2018 Running USA Conference in Austin, Texas on Feb. 11. Click here to view a list of previous Women’s Leadership Award recipients.
