PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh chapter of Women in Sports and Events (WISE) honored Patrice Matamoros as the 2017 Woman of Excellence on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the Cambria Hotel & Suites Pittsburgh. The award recognizes an extraordinary woman who has made a significant impact on the business of sports.

Matamoros is the CEO of Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc. (P3R), Pittsburgh’s premier organization for promoting running and community health and fitness through large-scale events, races and education programs, including the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend or events. She joined P3R in 2008 as the executive director and successfully helped re-launch the Pittsburgh Marathon after a five-year hiatus. Since 2009, the event has continued to grow from an organization with no sponsors, no runners, no staff and no volunteers to an event that now supports 18 full-time staff members, 4,000 volunteers and more than 40,000 runners annually.

Under Matamoros’ leadership, P3R has created several fitness initiatives and programs for the Pittsburgh community. These include Steel City Road Runners (SCRR), a running club with more than 1,000 members; Kids of STEEL, a free nutrition and exercise kids program with involvement of more than 130 schools and 6,000 children annually; and the Run for a Reason Program, which has raised more than $10 million for national and local charities since 2009. P3R also supports a year-long calendar of races, including the GNC Live Well Liberty Mile and EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler.

Matamoros was previously named the 2013 Sportswoman of the Year by Dapper Dan Charities of Pittsburgh, which is one of the oldest nonprofit and fundraising community sports clubs dating back to 1936. She was chosen for her extraordinary efforts of revamping and strengthening security at the 2013 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, which took place three weeks after the tragic bombing event at the Boston Marathon.
