Straight from the Horse’s Mouth: P3R Supports Return of Pittsburgh Police Mounted Unit

Pittsburgh Marathon organizers donate funds for the purchase of the first horse

PITTSBURGH – When the Pittsburgh Police department announced plans to bring back a mounted unit in March, Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc. (P3R) knew it wanted to get involved. P3R actively seeks out opportunities to give back to our community, and donating funds for the purchase of the first horse seemed like a perfect way to acknowledge an organization that has been instrumental in supporting P3R events over the years.

The horse, aptly named Guinness, stands at 17.3 hands and weighs in at 1,800 pounds. He is the first of six geldings between the ages of 5 and 10 that Pittsburgh Police Commander Ed Trapp hopes will make up the mounted unit.

It’s an important step toward revitalizing Pittsburgh’s mounted unit, which had been around since 1932 before being disbanded in 2003 due to a financial crisis. The Percheron Paint Mix became the first member of the restored patrol after an officer had been taking private riding lessons with Guinness.

According to Trapp, “he is a special kind of horse that will be able to handle a busy schedule of community relations and other special events,” including the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events.

“At P3R, we’re passionate about providing an exceptional experience for all of our participants and partners at every event. Part of that experience is keeping everyone safe,” said Patrice Matamoras, P3R CEO and Race Director. “Knowing our marathon weekend of events now attracts nearly 40,000 participants and more than 300,000 spectators, we are excited the Pittsburgh Police mounted unit will be there to provide an extra level of security.”

The Pittsburgh Police mounted unit will be particularly useful in high-traffic areas and public events like the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events. Officers will be able to move large groups because they can see and communicate with each other above the crowd. They also enjoy a high vantage point up to 10 feet above others, which will allow them to see more people and for more people to see them.
