As the days get shorter and temperatures drop, it’s important to take extra precautions when heading out for a run or walk. Keep these five safety tips in mind to stay visible, aware, and safe throughout the fall and winter months.

Tip #1 Be Visible
Reflective gear, bright colors, and lights can help you stand out and ensure you're easily spotted by motorists and pedestrians alike. Consider a reflective vest, jacket, or even accessories like elastic wristbands or magnetic reflectors. For an extra layer of safety, use a headlamp or wearable lights. These not only illuminate your path but also make you more visible to others sharing the road or trail.
Tip #2 Plan Your Route
Know where you are going before heading out the door. When the sun sets early, selecting well-lit routes becomes crucial. Stick to paths with adequate street lighting or well-lit parks. Not only does this enhance your visibility, but it also helps you navigate safely, avoiding potential hazards like uneven surfaces or icy patches. Prioritize routes that are well-maintained and familiar, reducing the risk of slips and falls in the dark.
Tip #3 Share Your Plan
Let others know when and where you plan on going. Consider sending friends and family a text sharing your route or area you will be in and at what time. Many phones and smart watches can share and send location information when requested.
Tip #4 Be Aware
Turn down the music and see what is happening around you. Always look at your surroundings for potential obstacles. Due to low visibility, sidewalk cracks and potholes can become dangerous to runners and walkers. Consider running with a light source to help see such obstacles.
Tip #5 Safety in Numbers
Consider joining a run club or running with a friend. Click HERE to view a list of Run Clubs in the Pittsburgh area.
