DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and Íslandsbanki Reykjavík Marathon Announce International Partnership, Connecting Two Iconic Running Destinations

From Pittsburgh’s high-energy neighborhoods to Reykjavík’s dramatic northern landscapes, the partnership links two unforgettable race experiences.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. and REYKJAVÍK, Iceland — The DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and the Íslandsbanki Reykjavík Marathon today announced a new international marathon partnership inviting runners to experience two distinctly different, yet equally unforgettable, destinations through the shared passion of running. The partnership connects Pittsburgh’s high-energy, neighborhood-driven race weekend with Reykjavík’s scenic, nature-infused marathon experience, creating new opportunities for runner travel, cultural exchange, and global storytelling. Together, the two events aim to inspire runners to explore the world one finish line at a time.
“For runners who love to travel, this partnership opens the door to unforgettable, bucket-list experiences, offering two very different races that showcase the heart, character, and beauty of their cities,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “Both marathons are powered by their communities, and this collaboration allows us to highlight the people, neighborhoods, and volunteers who make race day special in Pittsburgh and Reykjavík.”
Set against Pittsburgh’s historic bridges, riverfronts, and unique neighborhoods, the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon is known for its unmatched spectator support and block-party atmosphere, with entire communities lining the course to cheer runners through the City of Champions. In contrast, the Íslandsbanki Reykjavík Marathon offers a rare opportunity to run through one of the world’s northernmost capital cities, featuring courses that showcase colorful streets, coastal views, and Iceland’s dramatic natural landscapes.
“At our core, both marathons are about bringing people together, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and creating moments that stay with runners long after they cross the finish line,” said Hrefna Hlín Sveinbjörnsdóttir, Race Director of the Íslandsbanki Reykjavík Marathon.
As sister marathons, the two events will collaborate on destination-driven storytelling, highlight runners traveling between Pittsburgh and Iceland, and explore curated travel opportunities encouraging participants to “Run Pittsburgh, Experience Reykjavík” — and vice versa.
"This partnership marks a significant milestone in P3R's efforts to grow the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon’s global footprint and further drive its economic impact on our region," said VisitPITTSBURGH President & CEO Jerad Bachar. "By leveraging the convenient connectivity of the Icelandair direct flight, we look forward to welcoming more global athletes and spectators to experience the very best of Pittsburgh."
Additional details, including runner travel opportunities and partnership initiatives, will be announced soon.
