PITTSBURGH, PA — Drew Griffith, recently honored as the Gatorade Boys Pennsylvania Track & Field Player of the Year, has chosen to channel his award funds to a cause he deeply values: inspiring kids to move through Kids of STEEL.
“I chose Kids of STEEL for the Gatorade grant because I love their mission and want to inspire the next generation of runners.” Griffith stated.
A standout athlete from Butler Area Senior High School, Griffith shattered four state records this past season and set a new national prep record in the 1600-meter with an impressive time of 3:57.08. Additionally, he captured the 2-mile title at the national Brooks PR Invitational with a remarkable 8:31.46, making it the No. 2 time in prep history. This summer, he became only the 22nd U.S. high school runner to complete a mile in under four minutes, winning the HOKA Festival of Miles with a time of 3:57.72.
Griffith earned the prestigious Gatorade Pennsylvania Player of the Year award not only for his extraordinary athletic achievements but also for his excellence in the classroom and his commitment to his community.
Kids of STEEL, an initiative by P3R, is a free, award-winning program that inspires kids and their families to stay active together. Available at over 260 schools and community organizations in Western Pennsylvania and beyond, the program promotes a lifelong love of movement. P3R also supports youth through various races, resources, and running clubs. Griffith’s donation will help enhance the Kids of STEEL program, broadening its impact on children's lives. His generous act reflects his dedication to not only excelling on the track but also making a meaningful difference off it.
“We are deeply grateful to Drew Griffith for his generous support of Kids of STEEL,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “This donation will create lasting positive changes for many children, inspiring them to embrace a lifetime of movement.”
