Record Turnout at YMCA Pittsburgh Turkey Trot Brings Community Together to Support Local Food Pantries

More than 8,000 united to support YMCA Food Pantry Programs and fight hunger in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, PA (Nov. 27, 2025) – More than 8,000 participants from 38 states and six countries—including Great Britain, France, Ireland, Australia, and Canada—gathered to kick off Thanksgiving Day at the 35th annual YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh Turkey Trot presented by UPMC Health Plan. This year’s record-breaking turnout brought friends, families, and neighbors together to run, walk, and support YMCA food pantry programs and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, helping to make the holiday brighter for those in need.

"At a time of uncertainty for so many families, the outpouring of support from our community was truly overwhelming,” said Amy Kienle, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh. “The energy and excitement from everyone who braved the morning chill was incredible. We could not be prouder to serve this region. The thousands who showed up didn’t just participate in a race, they showed up for their neighbors, helping ensure that families facing food insecurity feel supported during the holiday season.”

Participants of all ages—from infants to those over 90—crossed the finish line on Pittsburgh’s North Shore in a variety of events: the 1-Mile Family Fun Run presented by Busy Beaver, the 5K presented by UPMC Health Plan, and the 5-Mile presented by FedEx. More than 275 participants embraced the challenge of the Double Gobble presented by Huntington Bank, completing both the 5K and 5-Mile races. Thanksgiving-themed costumes and festive hats added to the fun, lively atmosphere.

Peoples Gas hosted a food drive, encouraging participants to donate non-perishable items at packet pickup or on race day. Since March 2020, the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh has distributed approximately 120 tons of food across local neighborhoods, underscoring its commitment to fighting hunger through partnerships with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and other local organizations.

“This year’s Turkey Trot perfectly captures the Pittsburgh spirit,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “It’s amazing to see thousands of people come together not just to move, but to give back, support our neighbors, and inspire hope during the holiday season. Events like this remind us how powerful a community can be when we move together for a cause.”
