More than 8,500 participants expected for the annual Thanksgiving Day tradition on Thursday, Nov. 26
PITTSBURGH – Registration is now open for the 36th Annual YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh Turkey Trot presented by UPMC Health Plan, returning Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26. The annual tradition brings runners and walkers of all ages together to celebrate fitness, family and community while supporting local efforts to fight food insecurity.
From seasoned athletes to first-time participants, the Turkey Trot offers a fun and meaningful way to kick off Thanksgiving morning with family and friends.
“The Turkey Trot is proof of what happens when a community comes together with a shared purpose,” said Amy Kienle, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh. “At the Y, we believe we are for all—and on Thanksgiving morning, you can see that belief come to life as people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities come together to move, celebrate and give back.”
Proceeds from the Turkey Trot benefit YMCA food pantry programs and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, helping provide food and resources to neighbors throughout the region.
Participants can choose from the 5-mile, 5K, 1-mile, or Double Gobble (5K + 5 Mile) events, with all participants receiving a long-sleeve shirt. New this year: all participants will receive a medal once they cross the finish line.
Participants looking for an extra challenge can take on the “Double Gobble” by completing both the 5-mile and 5K events. Those who complete the challenge will receive a special gift.
Can’t make it to Pittsburgh? A virtual Turkey Trot option allows participants to take part in the Thanksgiving tradition from anywhere.
Last year, the Turkey Trot welcomed more than 8,000 participants from 38 states and six countries. Organizers expect more than 8,500 participants this year and are encouraging families to get moving together with half-price registration for participants ages 5–18. Children ages 4 and under can participate for free.
“The Turkey Trot has become a beloved Pittsburgh Thanksgiving tradition because it brings people together for a great cause,” said Bob Shooer, P3R Interim CEO and Board President. “Whether you’re running, walking or cheering from the sidelines, it’s a fun way to start the holiday with family and friends while also giving back to our community.”
