Ring Around the Rosie

Objective: To support gross motor development, coordination, balance and social skills, moving together in a circle, practicing timing and following song cues.

Directions: As you sing the song, do movements based on child's ability level.

Song:

"Ring around the rosie,
a pocket full of posies,
ashes, ashes,
we all fall down!"

Motions:

  • "Ring around - ashes" – hold hands and walk in a circle.
  • "We all fall down" – jump up or gently fall to the ground.

Modification Chart

Level Modification Purpose
🟡 0-1 year old Place baby on lap and bounce along to the lyrics. At "we all fall down" open your legs to make a mini fall, gently dropping baby between the legs and back up. Rhythm, Early Learning
🟣 1-2 year old Move their body part you call out for them. Encourage imitation of simple movements, such as falling down. Imitation, Listen/Attention
🟢 2-3 year old Walk in a circle with peers holding hands and crouch down at the end. Independence, Teamwork
🟠 3-4 year old Move in a faster circle while staying balanced and practice controlled "falling" gently. Timing, Movement Control
🔴 4-5 year old Try various types of movement: tiptoe, skip, hop, gallop, as you go in a circle. Try to crouch down all together at the same time. Agility, Spatial Awareness
