Children from 180 Area Schools Complete the Kids of STEEL Program

Kids and their families celebrated the end of the program by crossing the finish line of the family-friendly races at this year’s Virtual DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon

Children from 180 local schools completed the Kids of STEEL program, a free training program that motivates kids and their families to get moving. As part of this award-winning program from P3R, participants ran or walked 25 training miles during an eight-week period. More than 3,000 of this year’s program participants celebrated the end of the program by running in the Virtual Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon.

“Even though the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon moved to a virtual space this year, it was amazing to see that so many families were inspired to keep moving and cross the finish line together at this year’s Virtual Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “We are so proud of this year’s participants for their determination to complete the Kids of STEEL Program and accomplish their goal this spring.”

Not only is Kids of STEEL inspiring a life-long love of running for participants, but it’s also inspiring the whole family to move. In a recent survey, 58 percent of Kids of STEEL parents said their physical activity increased because of their child’s participation in the program.

“We love hearing from parents that the Kids of STEEL program has inspired them to join their kids as they track their activity for the Kids of STEEL mileage log,” said Leslie Turis, P3R Director of Youth Programming. “It’s so exciting to see parents make race weekend a family celebration of fitness by joining their kids in their last mile or even signing up for their own races.”

Since launching in 2011, Kids of STEEL keeps growing and more than 50,000 children have become official Kids of STEEL. Click here to view photos of this year’s participants completing their virtual races. See list below of the participating schools in this year’s program.
