UPMC Health Plan Extends Partnership as the Official Health Insurance Provider of P3R’s Year-Round Calendar of Events

UPMC Health Plan has partnered with P3R over the past nine years and will extend the partnership until 2023

PITTSBURGH (January 21, 2020) – P3R announced a partnership extension with UPMC Health Plan that will extend this nine-year partnership through 2023. The three-year deal names UPMC Health Plan as the official health insurance provider of P3R’s year-round calendar of events, including the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events, EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler, Fleet Feet Liberty Mile, and the FlyBy 5K presented by CNX Resources. UPMC Health Plan is also the presenting sponsor of the GAP Relay.

Since 2011, UPMC Health Plan has been the title sponsor of the UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon, which was recently named the Best Half Marathon in Pennsylvania by
RaceRaves. The event, which is part of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events, attracts more than 13,000 participants each year.

“UPMC Health Plan is an incredible partner, and we’re excited to continue to work together to enhance community access to health & fitness activities as well as education,” said Troy Schooley, CEO of P3R. “The year-round support from UPMC Health Plan allows us to offer participants the best experience during our events.”

During the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend, UPMC Health Plan is also the co-title Partner of the UPMC Health Plan/UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K, and is a presenting partner of the event’s Volunteer Program - supporting the 4,000 volunteers that make Marathon weekend possible. UPMC Health Plan also participates in the FedEx Pittsburgh Corporate Challenge - P3R’s employee wellness initiative. With over 800 employees that participated in the marathon weekend of events, UPMC Health Plan was the largest team in 2019.

“UPMC Health Plan has been a proud sponsor of P3R for many years and we support their efforts to help improve the health, fitness, and overall wellbeing of runners everywhere,” said Dr. Joon Lee, chief medical officer at UPMC Health Plan. “Whether you are an elite marathoner or a beginner looking to run your first 5K, P3R has a race for all ability levels and we’re happy to extend our on-going partnership with them for many years to come.”

UPMC Health Plan is helping P3R runners kick-start their half marathon training with this year’s Half Marathon Kickoff Training Run on Feb. 8th. Runners can check-in beginning at 7 a.m. at The UPMC Rooney Sports Complex and the run will take off at 8:30 a.m. With free giveaways, a photo booth, and a MOVE commitment board, there is a lot for runners to celebrate as they begin to train for May. UPMC Health Plan has also been the presenting sponsor of the GAP Relay since its inaugural run in 2018. This 150-mile relay consists of 24 legs through the Great Allegheny Passage and has teams of 4, 6, or 8 running through the night and into Saturday’s finish. UPMC Health Plan’s partnership in this race assures our runners’ safety as well as aids in the donation to the Allegheny Trail Alliance.

After Setting Records in 2019, P3R Looks Forward to Inspiring Even More Runners to Cross the Finish Line in 2020

More than 60,000 runners participated in P3R events in 2019, including a record number of youth; 2020 racing season kicks off with DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, May 1-3

PITTSBURGH, PA (January 16, 2020) – P3R, the engine behind Pittsburgh’s greatest races like the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events, inspired a record of more than 60,000 runners to get moving and achieve their fitness goals during its events in 2019. A record number of youth also participated in races last year, thanks to the award-winning Kids of STEEL. P3R is planning for a bigger and better year in 2020 and hoping to inspire first-timers with new event experiences and year-round programming for runners of all ages and abilities.

Beyond record participation, P3R was able to give back to the community in big ways in 2019. More than $1 million was raised through the legs and hearts of 2,046 charity runners. P3R also awarded more than $62,000 in grants to schools and organizations to keep Pittsburghers moving and continued to be a leader in sustainability by hosting the first-ever carbon neutral trail relay event in the U.S at the GAP Relay presented by UPMC Health Plan.

New and expanded partnerships with top national brands and local companies made 2019 races unforgettable experiences for participants and spectators alike and inspired new runners to get moving. For the first time, the EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler featured an interactive course that showcased several of Pittsburgh’s iconic traditions, including Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, Pittsburgh sports, pierogies, Pittsburghese and parking chairs.

“At P3R, we strive to inspire any and all to run with us, and we’re going to make sure that everyone who participates in our races — whether they run a six-minute mile or a 13-minute mile — has an exceptional experience,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “Each of our events this year will make it fun, easy and exciting to reach new fitness goals.”

The 2020 race season kicks off with the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events, scheduled for May 1-3. With more than 40,000 runners expected to register, Pittsburgh’s largest running event will offer something for everyone, no matter their age, pace or experience. Other P3R events coming back in 2020 include the Fleet Feet Liberty Mile, GAP Relay presented by UPMC Health Plan and EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler.

P3R wants to keep runners motivated and inspired all year. The Run with P3R Challenge, which debuted last year, is back by popular demand! Runners can earn an extra medal by completing a DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon event, the Fleet Feet Liberty Mile and the EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler in 2020. P3R also will continue to offer Ready.Set.MOVE, a quarterly subscription box carefully curated with industry-leading products that can be used during workouts and training.
