PITTSBURGH  – Pittsburgh’s North Shore buzzed with energy tonight as more than 2,000 runners of all ages and abilities took part in the second annual America’s Mile presented by VisitPITTSBURGH — now officially the city’s largest summer one-mile run. Held on the opening night of Picklesburgh, the event blended community celebration with top-tier competition, featuring a blazing-fast elite field of national-caliber middle-distance athletes.

This year introduced a new twist to the Elite Mile: “The Real Dill Chase,” a playful nod to the pickle festival happening just across the river on the 6th and 7th Street Bridges. In this gender head-start format, the top male and female athletes went head-to-head for a $1,000 bonus and bragging rights.

The night culminated in thrilling finishes as Stephanie Brokaw, 34, of Manhattan, Kan. broke the tape in 4:43, securing the overall win for the women. On the men’s side, Carter Cutting, 20, of Wilsonville, Ore. crossed first in 4:09, capping off a fast and unforgettable night of racing. The elite athletes also competed for a share of the event’s $25,700 prize purse, further solidifying America’s Mile as one of the most exciting summer races in the region.

“We were thrilled to welcome runners back to the North Shore for another unforgettable night,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “America’s Mile is turning into one of the can’t-miss events of the summer, and it’s all about celebrating every runner—from the pros at the front to those chasing their first finish.”

The eight-heat race, designed to welcome everyone from elite athletes to first-timers, awarded a total prize purse of $25,700.

In the Unstoppable Mile presented by Brooks Running, Anthony Toskin, 24, of Thornville, Ohio and Tori Reevers, 28, of Louisville, Ohio earned top honors with times of 4:26 and 5:13, respectively. The Masters Mile presented by UPMC Health Plan saw wins from Andrew Spangenberg, 41, of Frederick, Md. and Heather Cleary, 41, of Morgantown, W. Va., while the RUN Varsity Heat presented by Brooks Future Run showcased the rising talent of Jonah Montangnese, 6, of Sewickley, Pa., and Caroline Shirley, 16, of Murrysville, Pa.

After crossing the finish line, runners and spectators headed to Mike’s Beer Bar on Federal Street for the official Meet Me At Mike’s after party, which featured a complimentary Lil Cinder Lime beer from Cinderlands for finishers 21+, a live DJ, photo ops, and the Special Olympics Pennsylvania Pool Plunge.

As a unique feature of the event, all runners were randomly assigned an Elite Heat participant in the Elite Derby. Runners paired with champions—Brokaw or Cutting—won a limited-edition Brooks Running hat.

America’s Mile presented by VisitPITTSBURGH is the second event in the 2025 Steel City Series, culminating with the EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler & 10K on Nov. 9.
